Like their natural hosts, pearls are prone to damage from pollution and rough treatment. Store pearls separately from other jewellery as these soft stones can be easily scratched by harder gemstones or metals. Excessive sun and heat can also damage pearls, dehydrating them. Perfumes, oils, sunscreen etc should be avoided. Wipe pearls gently with a soft cloth after wear to remove any trace residue. Pearls are normally strung on silk and moisture, oils and frequent touching can degrade the integrity of this silk. As a result, regular re-stringing is recommended. Never expose pearls to chlorinated water.
Silver will naturally tarnish when exposed to the air, so store it in an airtight container or tarnish-protecting cloth to help to minimize the amount of care necessary. Keep your sterling silver jewellery in a cool, dry place. Polishing cloths are an excellent choice for cleaning your sterling silver jewellery.
Gold will develop a film build up of oils from lotions, powders, soaps and natural skin oils which takes away from it's natural patina. Chemicals in the air can also oxidize the gold depending on the karat grade used. Always remove gold jewellery before entering swimming pools or using household cleaners, as chlorinated water and harsh chemicals can erode gold jewellery, create abrasions or reduce lustre. Keep your precious pieces in a fabric-lined jewel case, or a box with compartments or dividers.
The choice of stone setting is a security as well as an aesthetic choice. The more a stone is exposed, the more vulnerable it is to damage and loosening. At home ultrasonic cleaners can also loosen gem settings. Repeated rough treatment and wear can loosen all stone settings and you could lose your precious gems. Fine jewellery should be checked at least once a year for wear and the security of settings.
